Benefits of a COLORBOND® steel roof

There is no doubt the choice of your frame and roof for your new home is unlikely to be your first consideration. People forget the fundamental role these foundations make to a home. These two items are generally not discussed or even seriously considered. It is assumed all homes are built the same. They are not!

In this article we outline the benefits a steel roof delivers.

Have you ever thought about the following?

  1. Durability

Your COLORBOND® steel roof is durable and resilient, with BlueScope’s industry-leading metallic coating incorporating Activate® technology to provide enhanced corrosion resistance. It is designed specifically for the Australian residential house and commercial framing markets.

Colorbond® Steel is manufactured in Australia to Australian Standards (AS1397 and AS/NZS 2728) and tested in some of the harshest Australian conditions over the last 50 years. It is far more than just a ‘paint on steel’.

    • Steel base manufactured to meet relevant Australian Standards.
    • Base is coated in BlueScope’s industry leading metallic coating incorporating Activate® technology*, to provide improved corrosion resistance.
    • A thin pretreatment layer is applied to optimise the adhesion of further coatings.
    • A corrosion inhibitive primer is baked onto the surface.
    • A topcoat of exterior grade paint is baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking and blistering preserving the finish for longer.

    * Active® technology is not available for COLORBOND ® Intramax® steel, and COLORBOND® steel products with a galvanised steel substrate.

  2. Tested in Australian conditions

Homes built in Australia face challenging weather conditions. Having to deal with the extremes of heat and cold, dust, rain, wind and hail. Both materials (Truecore® frame and Colorbond® Roof) have been extensively tried and tested in Australian conditions.

COLORBOND® steel roofs undergo extensive testing including corrosion testing, durability testing, application testing (to ensure it can be used in a wide range of building and manufacturing application and with all the standard building products used across the home building industry) and outdoor exposure testing.

Colorbond® has over 50 years of Australian research and development behind it. This has helped create a range of technologies that give genuine COLORBOND® steel its long-lasting performance when subjected to some of the harshest Australian conditions.

  3. Maintenance is a breeze

Maintaining your COLORBOND® steel roof is facilitated by natural rainfall. Simple maintenance through regular washing with clean, fresh water will prolong its life and maintain its appeal and attractiveness for longer periods, protecting one of your most important assets.
  4. Warranty Backed by BlueScope

To back the quality of the products in your home your Colorbond® Steel Roof has a 45 year warranty. *

    *Subject to terms and conditions
COLORBOND® is backed by BlueScope, one of Australia’s largest manufacturers. The COLORBOND® customer service team can answer any warranty questions on 1800 022 999.
  5. Sustainability and Thermal Efficiency

COLORBOND® steel is durable and resilient to Australia’s harsh climate. The product's long life helps conserve resources and energy invested in products with a shorter life span. COLORBOND® steel contains recycled content and the steel itself in COLORBOND® steel is 100% recyclable. In some cases it can be reused without reprocessing, again saving on energy and resource use.
  6. Flexibility in Colour Choice

You have a wide array of choices with 22 core colours in the range, including 6 in a premium Matt finish. You can choose a roof colour that sets the theme for your whole home and at the same time you have the flexibility to comply with design and siting guidelines in your dream land estate if required.
  7. Fire Performance

A home with steel roofing, walling, gutters and downpipes helps deliver a compliant system in bushfire prone areas, including in the most extreme, BAL-FZ (Bushfire Attack Level – Flame Zone) as defined in AS 3959:2018. This is further reenforced with all JG King Homes coming with steel frames as standard. Your steel frame won’t ignite or contribute to the spread of house fire.
